Overview

Gosaikunda is a sacred lake in Nepal's Langtang area. It is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, and it is surrounded by mythological myths and legends.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva built Gosaikunda when he thrust his trident into a mountain to extract the water to cool his burning throat after drinking poison during the ocean's churning. The lake is claimed to contain the water that Lord Shiva used to cool his throat and is hence a significant location for Hindu visitors.

Another mythology holds that Gosaikunda is the home of Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri. Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri are said to visit Gosaikunda on Janai Purnima, the full moon day in August, to bathe in its holy waters. During this time, Hindu pilgrims from all over Nepal and India make a long journey to Gosaikunda to bathe in the holy lake and receive blessings.

Gosaikunda is also associated with Guru Rinpoche, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, according to Buddhist mythology. Guru Rinpoche is said to have visited Gosaikunda during his travels in Nepal and meditated there for several years. Buddhist pilgrims regard the lake as a site of profound meditation and spiritual rebirth.

Aside from its spiritual significance, Gosaikunda is a popular trekking destination with stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and alpine forests. The walk to Gosaikunda travels through lovely villages and different terrain, providing travelers with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Nepal's natural beauty and cultural richness.
